My friend Paula and I were looking for a quick after-work hike somewhere in the city and I got to thinking about Interlaken Park. Located in the north Capitol Hill area, I had driven down the main road a number of times and marveled that such a densely forested area could exist right smack in the middle of an urban area. In doing some research on the park I found that in the late 19th century this 51 acre oasis was once the principal bike and buggy (!) path linking Capitol Hill with the boulevards on Lake Washington. Paula and I found it to be a terrific area for getting a little leg stretch. The thick woods are beautiful, making you feel like you’ve driven for miles to reach a secluded designation. And the numerous trails and switch-backs allow for extending the hike for as long as you like.
